All about The Gate: where you can be YOU

Come and visit us and see what The Gate is all about!

The Gate is Yarrow’s creative arts studio for people with learning disabilities. It is just off Richford Street, a five-minute walk from Goldhawk Road tube station.
We run creative workshops here so that people with learning disabilities can explore new ideas and discover their own unique voices.

Having fun at The Gate!

Our weekly programme has lots of activities from painting to fashion design to song-writing and performance. There is something for everyone and it’s great fun! We welcome members of all abilities. We focus on what a person can do rather than what they can’t: we work with members to make sure that everyone can take part in the sessions that interest them.

Here’s how a typical week at The Gate looks:

Monday
Morning: Painting – Creating art with paints. We also exhibit the work for others to see
Afternoon: Sound design – Making sounds together using ways to make sure everyone can get involved

Tuesday
Morning: Sculpture – Creating artworks and discovering lots of famous sculptors to inspire even more ideas
Afternoon: Radio and multimedia – Join in on our weekly radio show and learn how to use and enjoy computers and technology

Wednesday
Morning: Film studies – learning all about film making and making your own film
Afternoon: Performance and screen-writing – learning to develop ideas for short films and sketches and sharing them on YouTube

Thursday
Morning: Fashion – learning how to make clothes. We’ll also use these in our fashion shows
Afternoon: Song writing and performance – creating songs with a wide range of musical instruments and performing them too!

Friday
Morning: Drawing – expression through drawing. Learning how to draw the things all around you
Afternoon: Musical history – learning the history of music around the world and trying out different styles like African drumming

There are lots of other ways to get involved too, including:

SOUND OFF! Our fortnightly self-advocacy and campaigning group which all members are welcome to join.

Police training: Some of our members also help to provide user-lead learning disability awareness training for detectives in the Metropolitan Police.

Gate CUSTARD: our yearly musical showcase where our musicians perform their latest compositions on stage. You can see one of our shows in this video:

We also perform in other concerts and exhibit in art shows. We like to show everyone the amazing work that our members are producing here!

Hear what our members have to say in their own words:

“I like coming to the Gate to see my friends. I’ve written a song about Blackpool that I played onstage and learnt to play trombone.” – Jason.

“I’ve been able to do things with the Gate I only dreamed of doing before. I’ve performed my songs at music venues and learnt to do loads of cool stuff” – Darren.

“It’s good, people come here all the time. I like art, music, drama and making cups of tea.” – Mary

“The Gate has helped me be more independent, they helped me to write my own songs and meet new people and share my skills” – Labake.
