Yarrow’s MySpace centre in Greenford is a day centre for adults with learning disabilities and complex needs. The philosophy at MySpace is to support people to have choice and control over how they spend their time. Every week MySpace runs a host of activities to suit all interests and abilities. Based within a purpose-built facility in a peaceful setting near Ravenor Park, it is fully accessible and has a changing room with a ceiling hoist.
MySpace also provides a wheelchair accessible door-to-door pick up and drop off service.
The centre celebrated its fourth birthday this summer, and the list of available activities grows all the time. There are lots of different things to try, including:
- Boccia (a type of bowling)
- Chair yoga
- New Age Kurling
- Wheelchair dance
Whatever an individual’s ability, the activity is tailored to their needs and the team will support them to take part fully. The team liaises closely with the clinical and social work teams and other community services including GPs to make sure people are given the right support.
The centre also has sensory equipment and runs regular sessions in multi-sensory storytelling and relaxation. These are really popular and a great way to start the day or to wind down after a busy week.
Computing equipment is available for people to improve their digital confidence and learn new skills, and the team also offers travel training and support with job searches to help develop independence skills.
For those who prefer quieter activities there are also lots of board games, jigsaws and creative arts and crafts on offer.
The timetable of activities is different every week, and everyone has a chance to have their say about what they would like to do. Each individual chooses a session they would like to take part in the following week using a set of pictorial cards, and then a group timetable is drawn up.
Here is an example of a typical week at MySpace:
As well as the many regular activities, the group gets out and about as much as possible. For example, this year they have:
- Held smoothie making sessions at the park
- Had a picnic at the park to celebrate MySpace’s fourth birthday
- Gone on fabulous day trips to Southend and Park Royal
- Been ten-pin bowling
MySpace Greenford has also set up a very successful social enterprise selling items that they make together. All the money made is channelled back into making more products and helping to fund activities and outings. It’s also a great way for members to show off their talents and it gives a real sense of achievement. Here are some examples of the hand-made Christmas chocolates, cards and decorations that were made last year. They were a real hit!
