Back in February The Gate’s improvisational band Jamaica!! performed a gig at The ICA in London, alongside Sly & The Family Drone and Alan Courtis. Both bands performed separately before collaborating together – there were six drummers on stage at one point!
The performance also coincided with a solo show at the ICA by artist Morag Kiel, who teaches art at The Gate. You can see their fabulous banner, emblazoned with the words “Not Allowed To” behind the band here:
The show had an excellent write-up in music magazine The Wire: writer Daniel Neofetou described the collaboration as an “acoustic barrage” and “compelling”:
You can make your own mind up, because a video of the full 40-minute performance is available on YouTube too. Compelling, life-affirming, exuberant, loud, energetic, adventurous, expressive and impressive are just a few of the words we think best describe the show. A massive well done to everyone involved, what an amazing event to be a part of!
