Introducing Jeff

Yarrow has been a part of Jeff’s life, and he a part of ours, for a long time. We first met Jeff back in 1989, when Yarrow began managing the home that Jeff was living in at the time.

We like to think we’ve got to know Jeff pretty well over that time. He likes to keep busy and active and is a really organised person too. He’s great at working as part of a team. Jeff is a warm and friendly person, with lots of stories to tell about his long and interesting life. We think he ought to write his own book about it one day! But in the meantime, this is a chance for us to tell you a bit more about him. One of the first things to learn: please don’t ever spell his name Geoff, it’s Jeff with a J!

Hard working

Jeff has had a number of jobs over the years. When he was younger and still living with his parents, Jeff got his first job as a kitchen assistant at the Paddington Green police station. He got the job after seeing an advert on a notice board and going straight round to talk to them. Jeff really enjoyed this job, which was quite hard work: working full-time, six days a week including Saturdays. Jeff helped to prepare the food for the staff canteen, and he says that Fridays were the best day, because that meant fish and chips!

He also worked with Remploy for many years, doing jobs like packing stationery supplies.

And he still has a very important daily job: sorting the post for us at our Central Office here in Goldhawk Road, and collecting and delivering our mail to the Post Office nearby. He always arrives on time, with a friendly smile and time for a chat. He knows everybody here (and how to spell their names!) and can always be relied upon.

Well travelled and passionate about sport

Jeff’s other favourite things in life are travel and sport. He’s a lifelong football fan, and likes to go and watch his team, Queen’s Park Rangers at their home ground of Loftus Road as often as he can. He has travelled further away to support them too, including a memorable trip to watch them play at Wembley. With the help of one of our Opening Doors volunteers, he also recently went to see his first rugby match this year. He loved every minute and would love to go again if the chance comes up.

When it comes to holidays, Jeff is better travelled than many of us. He loves to join us on our coach day trips – and has fond memories of trips to Brighton, which may have something to do with the excellent fish and chips!

He also loves to travel by train, but is just as happy in a ‘plane. Jeff’s been on holiday to Barcelona, Scotland, France, Cyprus, Wales, Brighton, New York and Jamaica, to name but a few!

The trip to New York was a real highlight for Jeff, and he has many happy memories of it. He travelled with a group of service users and support workers from Yarrow. They saw all the big sights, including Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. One of the best experiences for Jeff was getting to sit in the front of a yellow taxi:

Next on his list of places to go is another trip to Jamaica. He enjoyed it so much the first time around. With the gorgeous weather, parties on the beach and a trip to see Bob Marley’s house, it was one of his favourite holidays ever.

Every time we sit down for a long chat with Jeff we learn something new about him. Our most recent discovery? He once saw Abba perform live in London after getting last minute tickets. Jeff ended up watching right at the front of the stage! As we say, we really think he ought to write all this down in a book one day.

We’re delighted that Yarrow recently won the tender to run Jeff’s accommodation again. It’s lovely to welcome him back, and we look forward to many more years of Jeff’s company.
